Food Hunt: Old Airport Road Food Centre

(Check out Part 2 of Old Aiport Road Food Hunt here!)

Old Aiport Road Food Centre is one of the more famous hawker centres in Singapore, even though its location might prove rather inaccessible for some.

But nothing stops me from getting good food so I’ll travel… for my food.

Just last Sunday, I made a trip there (my first this year) for dinner. Almost all the stalls were open so there were plenty of food choices 🙂

First up, Cho Kee Noodles. TBH, I only tried it because of the “funky” noodles they were selling… Beetroot noodles, Seaweed noodles, Whole grain noodles, Egg noodles etc. Out of curiousity, I tried it and it was NOT DISAPPOINTING AT ALL!

Noodles were springy and cooked just nice, though the taste of the seaweed was not too apparent. The chilli paste was very fragrant (it’s not chilli sauce). For those who do not take too spicy food, I think Cho Kee’s chilli paste is really mild and worth a try! The soup was neither tasteless nor fanstastic (just really average). The fillings of the dumplings were good – minced pork and prawn – that were seasoned just right. The skin of the dumplings could have been thinner and softer; I would prefer them to be closer to the Wanton type of skin. Would definitely come back for this again 🙂

Next up, Xiao Long Bao.

小笼包 (Xiao Long Bao) – SGD 4.00/ 5 pieces

The skin was a little thick for my liking, but other than that, no complaints! The soup and meat filling was satisfying and I was pleasantly surprised that there was still some soup in the Xiao Long Bao (past experiences at other hawker centres proved horrible).

I also tried the Pan Fried Dumplings 煎水饺 (not pictured) from the same stall and yummy yummy… It was good too. The meat filling of the dumplings were super juicy and sweet (from the broth), while retaining that crispy fried surface on one side. Will definitely return for these two as well 🙂
